BIOGRAPHY
We are two young Egyptian and multi-award-winning architects. Our professional career has begun with being involved in projects with a social and environmental cause. This experience has made us realize many things about the profession and has reformulated a conscious understanding of design as a vital impact tool on our built environment. we believe that architecture is a form of justice human and how architecture can support and enhances communities, with a particular interest in the always-changing ways that people interact with space. With over four years of experience in the architecture and integrated community development field where we collaborated with different architecture practices in Egypt, such as; CDC-Abdelhalim Ibrahim, TICD-Takween Integrated Community Development, and Hand Over.
In 2019 we founded Almena ـــa collaborative architecture practice to try out some of the ideas that we believe in and try to bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary architecture. Almena is an Egyptian architecture firm founded and in Cairo, Egypt, in 2019. We are founders and partners Abdallah Mekkawi (born 1994) and Abdelrahman Adel (born 1994), closely paralleled one another, with both attending the same architectural school. We are perhaps best known for our proposal for Alsheikh Hassan community school in Minya, Egypt. We also have been visiting teaching assistants in the architectural design labs at the department of architecture at Ain Shams University since 2019.
Today, our design works have been nationally recognized by winning the Gold prize at the Cairo Design Award for two consecutive years. At the international level, we have been involved in the design and build of three projects that were nominated for the Aga Khan Award. Also, our design work was published on prestigious platforms such as; Archdaily, UIA, and many others. With this approach and expertise, we realized we want to continue our journey and to pursue our aspiration of becoming well-grounded architects who can drive meaningful change in Egypt.
