we attempt to create a villa defining features of heritage of the central Arabian region of Najd. The villa has been designed to comply with environmental needs and requirements, and cultural and social concepts. The building design reflects a dimension of our heritage and collective identity, as the housing patterns reflect the formation, function, and environment of the built environment and distinguish its identity.
The design concept for “Villa - Khalid Mulla” aims to create an adaptable building to its context. The design concept aims to re-explore the design concepts of traditional architecture in the built environment in Islamic Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and to make an attempt to incorporate the traditional architectural patterns of the central Arabian region of Najd, which included solid masses, covered streets, and the incorporation of courtyards. Also, the building techniques and materials. the design patterns extracted from traditional architecture provided a positive example of how one can adapt and apply a traditional building technology into contemporary architecture.
The design experience allows the visitor to get a unique experience and interact with nature during the journey within the building. The design approach depends on carving pockets in the building skin to create an inner oasis in the building mass. The ground floor is divided to two residential units each with separate entrance freed and made entirely open to enhance visual contact with nature the front yard of the building.
